An Alternative “Pouch” for a Baby Wallaby

Call it quick innovative thinking or call it lazy and uninspired, Tilly, a baby wallaby who was found outside her mom’s pouch, has found a new pouch to nestle in to: a backpack.

A resident of the ZSW Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire, England, Tilly is part of a line of unusually reared animals, warming up to the alternative pouch offered to her by attentive staff members of the Zoo.

Discovered last March, Tilly was found separated from her mother’s pouch, with the poor baby wallaby aimless and lost in the zoo’s grounds. Being a baby, Tilly was far from being mature enough to weather the elements, much in need of a mother’s pouch in line with a wallaby’s natural development cycle.
Staff members of the zoo were quick in finding an alternative pouch for Tilly, using the combination of a backpack and a blanket to serve as Tilly’s new “pouch”.

As a member of the marsupial class of mammals, wallabies’ growth stages can be likened with that of kangaroos, with babies requiring the safety and protection of a mother’s pouch during early life stages.

Generally speaking, wallabies denote any of the 30 species of the Family Macropodidae, an informal designation that’s dubbed for macropods which are comparably smaller than kangaroos.

Generally forest dwellers, their known predators includes foxes, feral cats and wild dogs, and as dietary habits goes, they are herbivores.

Had Tilly not found a new pouch to settle in, she ran the risk of getting injured, even to points where her overall well-being could have been at risk.

Now with her new alternative pouch, Tilly’s more in a position to develop ideally, though in a rather unusual method as her future wallaby cohorts would certainly tell her in the future.

The Flemish Giant Rabbit

Known for its obviously apparent large size, the Flemish Giant Rabbit is among the most many types of domesticated rabbit pets for homes, opted for its… well, its large size.

With no actual maxim size on record, the average weight of this giant rabbit variety is averaged at 22 pounds, as its history and origin is also not defined and exact, only that Dutch Traders were reported to have brought their early-ancestor varieties around, during the 16th and 17th Centuries.
The American Rabbit Breed Association (ARBA) classifies seven known varieties of the Flemish Giant Rabbit, with white, steel gray, sandy, light gray, fawn, blue and black. In terms of classes, three doe classes and three buck classes fill the class categorization of Flemish Giants, with Junior, Intermediate and Senior bucks and does.

Flemish Giant Rabbits take their name after the giant rabbits of Flanders, and their loose origins link them with crossbreeding with Patagonian Rabbits. As mentioned above, Dutch Traders brought early ancestors of the Flemish Giant with them, that ancestor being the Patagonian, from routes to Europe to the Argentine Republic and back.

Juniors class Flemish Giants, as defined by the ARBA Standard of Perfection, ideally weigh 6 pounds, as senior class bucks average at 13 pounds, with senior class does at 14 pounds.

Weighing an average 22 pounds, Flemish Giants are quite huge, and their largeness can even be dubbed as unusual when compared to other rabbit types.

As pet rabbits, they are not known to have life-depended particular treatments over regular rabbits, but their food consumption is reported to be significantly larger, as their size would bring expectations to be.

If you’re on the lookout for a large rabbit breed to have as a pet, Flemish Giants may just be what you’ve been looking for.

Canary – The Utility Bird Turned Pet

Tweety may just be the world’s most famous canary, the one who tot he saw a putty-tat.

But far be it for real canaries to be as quirky as him (yes, Tweety is a dude), real pet canaries have their own “tweety aspect”, calling for equal amounts of dedication any pet owner would put to his/her pet.

Primarily used in cave mining explorations at one point in time, canaries have managed to crossover from being utility/work class pets, to mainstay human companions in households and homes.

This shift, however, doesn’t mean that taking care of canaries is an easy, sweet deal. As pets, canaries do have their particulars related to ideal enclosures and dietary requirements.

Here are some specifics about them, about the different canary types, ideal enclosure conditions and feeding requirements.
Canary Types – the most common type of canary would be yellow in color, but canaries also do come in other color varieties, different breeds and with different body-marks.

The most commonly encountered of Canary breeds includes the Fife, the Crested, Yorkshire and Gloster Coroner, as the most commonly known color varieties/mark varieties are defined as the white, brown variegated, buff and clear yellow.

With different canary types, prospective canary pet owners can take their pick, in finding the right canary for them.

Enclosures – canaries aren’t all that particular regarding cages, but enclosures with horizontal bars is a must. They can be housed in outdoor cages which are built to weather the wear and tear of outdoor environments, or be put in indoor cages often built with removable plastic bases.

One thing about having canaries as pets is that they require daily exercise. This would mean that they’d have to be occasionally let out of their cages, to give them room to stretch their wings. As it would go without saying, rooms and windows would have to be locked when a canary is let out, ensuring that they don’t accidentally fly off.

Also, cages will have to come with covers, to provide the right environment for canaries to sleep. Generally, covering cages at night has proven to work well for canaries and canary pet owners.

Feeding Habits – canaries aren’t really all that fickle to feed, warming up to a wide range of food options from grains, seeds and assorted vegetables. Fresh fruit cuts are often advised, but certain food items aren’t advisable for canaries to have. These would include potatoes, lemons, and avocadoes. Drinks designed for human consumption, such as processed fruit drinks or sweet drinks are also not advised for canaries to consume.

Regular Maintenance/Upkeep – apart from regular exercise, canaries also require daily baths, to ensure that their preening activities remain consistent and healthy. With regards their nails/claws, most canary owners suggest filing them as a method of keeping them trim. Clipping them is not a good idea.

So there you have it. Some of the most basic must knows every canary pet owner should know about, and implement, regularly.

Macaw Parrots as Pets

Macaw Parrots are famed as the posterboy for parrots as pets, popular because of their colorful feathers and captivating playful natures. With almost 18 known species of macaws known to be, Macaw Parrots are the most dense in terms of parrot species types, generally known to be large sized birds which can live for 25 to 80 years.

Combining intelligence and beauty, they make great options for pet parrots, but their upkeep and maintenance does require degrees of dedication, along with considerations for certain inherent natures of macaws.
If you happen to be entertaining the thought of keeping one as a pet, here are some macaw parrot aspects you should know about, before investing in getting one into your home.

The Screeching Aspect

Critics generally agree that macaw parrots do look great, but in terms of the noise they generally produce, critics are conflicted over the general peace and quiet pet owners can expect from having them around.

Certain types of macaws are also known to be destructive and generally demanding, but these personality aspects of macaws can be curbed through a healthy regimen of pet upkeep and care.

Further research over these personality traits of a potential macaw pet parrot will have to be at the forefront of your priorities, matched to the situation you have at home.

In Terms of Feeding and Care

As high-in-energy birds, macaws require balanced healthy diets for them to be their parrot-y selves.

They are known to eat various types of food items, including insects, fruits, seeds and nuts. A number of formulated diets are known to exist for macaws, from the option which combines food products with solid nutritional bases, to sticking to a seed-only diet. Generally, feeding macaws with food items rich in phytonutrients is advised, since this boosts the immune system, preventing the rise of diseases and ailments.

Regular baths are a part of a macaw’s health and care regimen, a given requirement to ensure that their plumes and skin conditions are at their healthiest. Trimming their wings can be done if flight is to be a problem for macaw pet owners, but over-trimming isn’t advised, since this would debilitate a macaw’s natural capacity to move around.

Nails/claws also have to be trimmed, in ensuring that a macaw doesn’t get to accidentally scratch people, but not over-trimmed so as to leave them defenseless in cases when they come by other domestic pets (like cats).

Do well in getting to know a particular prospect if you are indeed entertaining the thought of keeping a macaw parrot as a pet.

As with getting any other type of pet, ensure that you are in the right capacity to provide a healthy environment for your parrot, giving it the chance to be physically fit and generally good natured as it lives on the natural course of its life.
