Watch: Rehabilitated Florida panther released into wild

Biologists with the state's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission returned a rehabilitated Florida panther to the wild on Monday.

The female panther, approximately 19 months old, was released on private property in southeast Hendry County, according to an FWC news release.

The release of the panther comes some 10 months after the panther kitten was struck by a vehicle in Collier County, leaving the panther with fractures in her right hind leg and rib as well as bruising around the lungs. The panther underwent surgery to mend the bone at Animal Specialty Hospital of Florida before being transported to White Oak Plantation in Yulee for further care, according to the release.

Florida Panther Seen Roaming Urbanized Part Of SW Fla.

NAPLES, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) —  Wildlife biologists are trying to capture a Florida Panther seen roaming around an urbanized part of Golden Gate Estates in southwest Florida.

The Naples Daily News reports that residents in one neighborhood have been reporting panther sightings for the past month.

Citizen spotters help save Florida panther

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A year after launching an online site for Florida panther sightings, state wildlife officials are finding the data useful, even if the occasional report turns out to be a fox -- or even a monkey.Yes, a monkey.

Wildlife biologists are using reports from the public to help track the population of endangered Florida panthers, a citizen-science effort similar to those used to track populations of birds, fish and other animals.

Panthers

Panthers remain to be among the most popular of big cats, with their dark sheens typically associated with the dark mysterious sides of cats.

With Bagheera from the Jungle Book being one of the most recognized panther characters in the world, Bagheera’s popularity has added fuel to the world’s fascination with panthers, with the Disney produced movie of the story doing its part in making them more and more interesting and popular to children.

However, significant confusion over panthers remain to be, with many not entirely sure over what the panther really is – is it actually a species or just a reference name?

Here’s a quick take in helping resolve such confusions.

The Black Panther – Panthers, generally speaking, are not exactly a species, but is rather a name that is typically utilized in defining a “big cat” with black fur.

Jaguars and leopards with dark furs are therefore included in the panther title, with both being big cats and coming with dark hued furs.

Considered to be among the most “elusive of big cats”, panthers are collectively and unofficially classified as endangered species, based on the fact that both Panthers and Jaguars are known to experience declines in their population numbers.

In the Jungle Book movie, Bagheera is described in IMDB as a panther. Given that panthers are native in Africa, the Americas and in Asia, Bagheera’s presence in the movie fits well with its overall plot, staying true to its base location or environment.

With the movie telling the tale of how jungle animals tried their best to convince a human child who had grown up in the jungle to go back to human settlements, the Jungle Book continues to be a story which is loved by many even until today.

Panther Cub Recovering After Road Accident

An injured panther cub was discovered by officials of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission a couple of weeks back, found on the roadside of State Road 82, Collier County, Florida.

The panther cub, a member of the endangered species population, was 3-months old, and its injuries are believed to have been caused by a vehicular accident. Given the state of how the panther cub was found, leads as to the accident’s culprits are sketchy as they often are with such incidents and cases.

A thorough checkup was done on the cub when authorities noted that it was initially unresponsive, and though the checkup didn’t show signs of major injuries, veterinarians were certain that if left alone, the cub would have a hard time surviving in the wild.

The diagnosis then brought the panther cub to the Animal Specialty Hospital of Florida, Naples, where a full-body walker was rigged to fit with the cub. The panther cub has been doing well since, and as such it stands a fighting chance in growing up well and healthy.

A couple of weeks back, officials of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found another panther cub who died from injuries sustained from vehicle-related accidents. Officials are convinced that the same panther cub was the newly rescued cub’s sibling.

Last year, records indicate that a third of panther deaths in the area are related to vehicular accidents. The recently rescued panther cub makes it the third cub and the seventh panther to be under the care of the Florida Zoo hospital.

The story reminds motorists of keeping speeds in check, in ensuring that no further roadside accident discoveries will take place.

A black leopard, also known as ‘black panther’, is actually a melano form of the leopard. It still has leopard spots—they’re just not easy to spot.
