Maltese

Dogs of royalty for more than two millennia, Maltese have been bred to behave like real princesses. These dogs are well-behaved, gentle, obedient, and take joy in being the focus of your love and attention, which they will happily give in return. Despite being a lapdog however, Maltese can be spirited dogs, having a surprising energy to them that may make them more than what novice owners bargained for. Maltese have a zest for life, taking joy in running around the yard and frolicking in puddles. At the end of the day however, Maltese love nothing more than cuddling with their masters.

The small size and well-behaved nature of Maltese makes them a perfect breed for city and apartment dwellers. Just give them a daily 20 to 30 minute walk around the neighborhood to keep them from getting bored, and you have a happy dog with you at home. Such is the desire of Maltese to stay close to their owners that they prefer small spaces than large ones, that way they are always in close proximity to their family.

Despite being small, Maltese are confident, having with them an aura of fearlessness—they can perfectly hold their own against other larger dogs. Despite looking fragile and in need of constant attention, Maltese are actually sturdy, secure breeds. Don’t over-pamper them, but make sure to give them love and attention.

Maltese are one of the few breeds that do well with children. Still, make sure the kids respect their space and play with them gently. No dog wants to be treated roughly, and despite Maltese being well-mannered, they still shun rough play.

Another thing to consider about Maltese is the amount of grooming they need. Their soft and silky coat needs regular brush. On the flipside, despite having regal coats, Maltese actually don’t shed much compared to other breeds, making them a good choice for allergy sufferers.
