It is no secret that chickens are often kept for their economic value as food products or commodities, but as the signs of the times would prove, there has been a significant increase of people keeping chickens as pets, standing to make a difference in the reasons why people keep chickens.

As the 2000 released CGI animated feature Chicken Run managed to depict the typical “production-inclined” care and keeping of chickens, the truth behind having chickens as pets is not as demanding as keeping them for food is, only requiring significant attention to the way pet chicken owners treat and take care of their pets.

Chickens being kept as pets have increasingly become popular in suburban and urban domestic zones, often kept for the chicken’s natural capacity to be in-house pest exterminators.

The 2000 animated comedy Chicken Run told the comedic tale of chickens who were intent in not becoming part of the poultry section of a grocery store, saying a lot about how smart chickens actually are, which in turn contributed to the rising popularity of chickens being kept as pets over the years.

Chicken

When people hear the word chicken, they commonly just start thinking about their favorite chicken dish. But besides being served for dinner, chickens have been used as a subject for a few movies. One of the most notable movies that starred chickens is Chicken Run, an animated film released back in 2000 and is one of the few stop motion movies that actually made it big in the cinemas. The movie was set in a small chicken farm in the 1950’s and revolves around the story of a group of chickens seeking help from a smooth talking rooster named Rocky to help them formulate a plan to escape the farm. The chicken’s race through time to get out as the farm owner decides to turn her chicken farm into a chicken pie factory. Eventually the chickens find a way out and escape death.

A little known fact about chickens is that some people actually keep them as pets rather than placing them in cages to lay eggs for them or fattening them up to be served as a main course. Chickens are tamed through being hand fed; however, certain breeds of chickens are known to be a little aggressive and might not be a good choice for pets. A female chicken is a better choice over a rooster since they are less noisy and aggressive.

Chickens are not recommended to be given to younger children as pets. But some breeds, like most of the bantam varieties and the silkies, are quite docile and calm and are usually recommended as pets for children that have disabilities. Although keeping a chicken as a pet may sound strange and unconventional, many people love them as pets because of their educational and entertaining behavior.
