The 6 Best Dogs for Adventure: The Rhodesian Ridgeback

If what you want is a companion who’s always eager for a new adventure, look no further than your dog.
Over the span of several millennia, dogs and humans have pursued just about any activity that can be had between man and his best friend. Humans have tamed dogs and trained them to herd flock, while other working dogs like hounds have been raised to hunt game.
And mind you, whatever job a dog may have, these furry friends are more than happy to lay down beside as you call an end to the day.
Here’s a look at six dog breeds that are ideal companions on your next adventure.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback

Known also by its bad-ass name, the African Lion Hound, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is native to South Africa, and was bred for the purpose of, believe it or not, hunting lions. This breed of athletic dog gets its name for its distinctive ridge along its back, which looks like a strip of hair that goes in the opposite direction of the rest of its fur.

For many handlers of the Rhodesian Ridgeback, this canine is a prized companion for its bravery, staring death in the eye and moving forward without fear. These are muscular and brave dogs, capable of running alongside horses while hunting prey across more than 30 miles of land thanks to their heavily padded feat.

With its ability to work in difficult terrain and high temperatures, it’s no wonder why the Rhodesian Ridgeback is sometimes called the Navy SEALS of dogs.
