Human Foods to Watch Out For Dogs and Cats

Because we are very well familiar with our dogs, most of the time, we find it convenient to let them eat
what we also eat. Oh, that instant connection! However, we do not exactly know which human foods
are suitable for both dogs and cats. A study shows that some human foods can cause serious illness
or even death to domesticated pets. The fact remains, pets should not be given human food unless
recommended by the veterinarian.

Jim Davis’ famous cartoon cat, Garfield made its way to the big screen and was known for its fat-
so body, arrogance and his love for lasagna. He would rather stuff himself with it rather than doing
something else. Now, is lasagna good for a tabby cat like Garfield?

A good number of human foods are not safe for pets. Although these foods may appear palatable and
may seem tasty to our pets, whether dogs and cats alike, it may to some extent, deadly if eaten. Eating
in the dining table while pets roam around freely can be tempting to offer them the food on the table,
but you have to be very careful what to feed them. Vets basic advice is not to feed human foods unless
of course, on a case-to-case basis.

If you are not certain what foods to give, rather not give it away just to be safe. Better be safe than
sorry, right? If you feel that your pet may have devoured a life-threatening food, do contact your vet
right away.

Here are some human foods to watch out for dogs and cats:

Coffee, Caffeine, Chocolate

Even if your dog has such sweet tooth, do not give chocolates. Plenty chocolates equal to large
quantities of theobromine. This is the chemical found in chocolates and may prove to be toxic to dogs
from small to large amount. Even a few ounces of chocolate can be sufficient enough to cause a small
dog some sickness. This means that there is no amount or type of chocolate that should even be allowed
for a dog to take-in. Chocolates also contain caffeine which is not good for them. In the same way, any
food that has these ingredients should be avoided.

Garlics and Onions

If you are fond of spicy foods, let your dog stay away from foods filled with garlic and onions. These
spices actually contain chemicals that damage the red blood cells of cats and dogs that hamper their
oxygen supply. Whether cooked or raw, these spices are considered a “beware” type for dogs and cats.

Xylitol

Ever come across Xylitol? These are artificial sweeteners found in gums, candies and mints. Some
are also used in toiletries like toothpaste and mouthwash. Xylitol can cause liver damage in dogs and
can also result to hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar resulting to vomiting and uncoordinated
movements.

Grapes, Raisins and Avocados

Kids may love grapes but don’t ever give to your dogs. Grapes can cause kidney failure, diarrhea and
excessive vomiting. The same goes with raisins and avocados.

Grapes and raisins can cause acute (sudden) kidney failure in cats and dogs. It is unknown what the toxic
agent is in these fruits. However, clinical signs can occur within 24 hours of eating and include vomiting,
diarrhea, and lethargy (tiredness). Other signs of illness relate to the eventual shutdown of kidney
functioning.

Prevention is always better than cure. As a responsible pet owner, you have to take note of these toxic
foods to avoid any life-threatening illness for you most loved pets.
